I often get asked questions about what I write, where my ideas come from and for whom I’m writing. This page is meant to answer lots of these questions. You can always leave me a note if you have more questions!
What age group do you write for?
I have mainly been working on stories for the 7 – 9 year old range of readers. I hope to publish my first book for this age group very soon and I am partway through writing a sequel to go with this particular story.
I have also written a couple of picture book stories, a story for the 8 – 12 year old age group and I am also slowly working on an idea for a series for the 8 – 12 year old age group as well.
What sort of stories do you write?
Most of my stories so far have been animal based adventure stories for the 7 – 9 year old age group. These are either stories based on the characters acting like real animals, or are a bit more fun and quirky and exhibit more human characteristics in the mischief they get up to.
For the 8 – 12 year old age group I have written a story about a girl at intermediate with a terrible name, and I am playing with an idea for a magical adventure based series.
Where do you get your story ideas from?
Lots of my ideas for writing stories and poetry comes from real life events, funny situations or something I might see occur in everyday life. Things my daughter and her friends may say or do, out walking in nature or sitting in one of my favourite cafes watching people and of course from animals.
The inspiration for my animal based stories usually comes from real life animals. A particular animal or something they do may trigger an idea for a story or a poem. Some of the antics the animals get up to in my stories really did happen – especially the animals who think they are expert escape artists (we once had a dog that could escape from just about anywhere!), or animals you would expect to be mortal enemies but in fact turn out to be the best of friends (a friend of mine had a cat and a rat that were best friends and used to curl up and go to sleep together!)
You can check out some of the animal inspirations for my stories on the Pet Parade page or on the Short Stories page
Where do you get your poetry ideas from?
I often find the best ideas for poems come to me when I am out walking. I often see or hear something that generates an idea and I can usually write the first verse or draft of a poem then and there.
My ‘Scootering’ poem came to me when I was out walking with my daughter who was riding her scooter at the time and she almost fell off (Check out my Poetry page).
